Privacy Policy

Staycation HK (“we”, “us”) publishes Hong Kong travel guides at www.staycationhk.co. This policy explains what personal data we collect when you use the site, why we collect it, who we share it with, and the rights you have over it. We keep it short and in plain English on purpose.

Who is responsible for your data

Staycation HK is the data controller for the personal data described here. If you have any question about this policy or want to exercise any of your rights, email hello@staycationhk.co or use the contact page.

What we collect, and why

1. Newsletter signup

If you subscribe to our newsletter we collect your email address, and your name if you choose to give it. We use this to send you the newsletter and a one-time welcome email. Every email we send includes an unsubscribe link, and you can unsubscribe at any time. Our legal basis is your consent, which you give by submitting the form.

2. Contact form and email

If you contact us we collect your name, email address and whatever you write in your message, so that we can reply. We keep correspondence for as long as needed to deal with your enquiry and for a reasonable period afterwards. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in responding to you.

3. Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand how the site is used: which pages are read, roughly where visitors come from, what devices they use, and which links are clicked (including clicks on affiliate links and newsletter signups). Google Analytics sets cookies and collects a pseudonymous identifier, approximate location derived from your IP address, and technical information about your browser and device. We do not use analytics to identify you personally and we do not use Google Analytics advertising features. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in understanding and improving the site. You can opt out with Google’s browser add-on or by blocking cookies in your browser.

4. Server logs and hosting

The site is hosted on Vercel. Like most hosting providers, Vercel automatically records basic technical information about each request, such as your IP address, browser type, the page requested and the time. This is used for security, performance and to keep the site running, and is retained only briefly. Our legal basis is our legitimate interest in operating a secure and reliable website.

5. Affiliate links

Some links on this site are affiliate links, most often to Klook and to partners that we work with through affiliate networks such as impact.com. When you click one, the destination site or the affiliate network may set a cookie on your device so that any booking you make can be attributed to us. That cookie is set by the third party, not by us, and their privacy policy governs it. We only receive aggregate reporting, such as the number of clicks and bookings and the commission earned. We never receive your name, payment details or booking details. See our affiliate disclosure for how this affects what we recommend.

Cookies

The site uses the following kinds of cookies and similar technologies:

  • Analytics cookies from Google Analytics (names beginning with _ga), used to tell returning visitors from new ones and to measure how the site is used. These are not essential and you can block them.
  • Affiliate tracking cookies set by the partner site or affiliate network after you click an affiliate link, used to attribute a booking to this site.

We do not use advertising cookies or sell data to advertisers. You can delete or block cookies in your browser settings at any time. The site works without them.

Who we share data with

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal data. We share it only with service providers that process it on our behalf, and only as far as needed to run the site:

  • Resend: stores newsletter subscribers and delivers our emails.
  • Google Analytics: site usage analytics, as described above.
  • Vercel: hosting and content delivery.
  • Affiliate partners and networks (for example Klook and impact.com): they receive click and booking attribution data via their own cookies, not personal data from us.

We may also disclose data if the law requires it, or to protect the rights, property or safety of Staycation HK, our readers or others.

International transfers

Our service providers operate globally, so your data may be processed outside the country you live in, including in the United States. Where we transfer data from the EEA, UK or Switzerland, we rely on providers that offer appropriate safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses.

How long we keep data

  • Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe, after which it is removed from the active list.
  • Contact messages: for as long as needed to handle your enquiry, then a reasonable period for our records.
  • Analytics data: Google Analytics retains event data for up to 14 months.
  • Server logs: a short period as set by our hosting provider.

Your rights

Depending on where you live, including under the Hong Kong Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance, the EU and UK GDPR, and similar laws, you may have the right to:

  • access the personal data we hold about you;
  • ask us to correct or delete it;
  • object to or restrict how we process it;
  • withdraw consent at any time, for example by unsubscribing from the newsletter;
  • receive a copy of your data in a portable format; and
  • complain to your local data protection authority.

To exercise any of these rights, email hello@staycationhk.co. We will respond within one month, or sooner where the law requires it.

Children

This site is not directed at children and we do not knowingly collect personal data from anyone under 18. If you believe a child has given us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Security

The site is served over HTTPS, and personal data is stored only with the providers listed above, each of which maintains its own security programme. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your data.

Third-party sites

Our guides link to many external sites, including hotels, tour operators and booking platforms. We are not responsible for their content or privacy practices, so please read their policies before giving them any personal data.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The date at the top shows when it was last changed. If a change is significant we will note it here and, for newsletter subscribers, by email.
