Hong Kong With Kids: How Many Days Do You Actually Need?

Short answer: five days. If you are asking how many days in Hong Kong with kids you need, and you want to do a theme park and still see the city, five is the number that works without anyone crying at 4pm. Four is doable if you drop one park. Three is enough for a stopover, not a holiday.
That is a bigger number than the standard advice, and it is worth understanding why before you book flights.
Why the family answer is bigger than the usual one
Our general guide to how many days you need in Hong Kong lands on three for a first visit: a day on Hong Kong Island, a day in Kowloon, a day for something further out. That holds up well for two adults.
It falls apart with children, for one reason. Hong Kong's two big family attractions are each a whole day, and neither of them is in the city.
Hong Kong Disneyland is out on reclaimed land at Penny's Bay on Lantau Island. Ocean Park is at 180 Wong Chuk Hang Road in Aberdeen. Each one fills a day on its own, so on a park day you are not also doing Victoria Harbour.
So a family that wants both parks has already spent two of its three days before seeing anything the city is actually famous for. That is the whole problem, and five days is what fixes it.
Hong Kong with kids: how many days for each kind of trip
Three days. One park, one day in the city, one day for Lantau or a slower morning. Family blogs do publish three-day Hong Kong itineraries and they work. The one we read introduces itself as a busy itinerary, which with young children is a warning rather than a selling point. Treat three days as a stopover.
Four days. The honest minimum for a proper trip. One theme park, two city days split between the Island and Kowloon, and a fourth day you deliberately leave loose. It is roughly what families ask about in the travel groups: whether four or five days is enough, with one or two Disney days in it.
Five days. Both parks, two city days, and one day that is allowed to go wrong. This is the number we would book. It is also the length the fuller published family itineraries tend to settle on.
Seven days or more. Only worth it if you are adding somewhere to the map: Macau, a beach, or a proper day out on Lantau. Seven days of Hong Kong city alone is more city than most children want.
The day the theme parks quietly take
Park days are longer than they look, and the opening hours are the reason.
Hong Kong Disneyland's own calendar has been showing park hours of 10:30am to 8:00pm, with some days running 10:00am to 8:30pm. That late start is genuinely good news with small children, because there is no dawn start to survive. It also means the day ends late, and you still have a journey of roughly 35 to 45 minutes back to Central or Tsim Sha Tsui at the end of it.
Ocean Park publishes hours that move around by date, recently 10:00am to 6:30pm, so check its park calendar for your dates rather than assuming. It is also split between a lowland section and a hilltop Summit, and its daily schedule lists separate times for the Summit, so read those as well as the headline opening hours before you plan a late start.
One thing families consistently over-budget: a second Disney day. Hong Kong Disneyland is a compact park, and regular visitors on Reddit are blunt that one day is plenty. We agree, and worked through it in detail in is one day enough at Hong Kong Disneyland. Cutting that second park day is the cheapest way to buy back a city day.
What actually changes the number
The age of your kids. Under about four, everything runs on nap time and the day has room for far less than you would plan for yourself. Add a day, or accept a shorter list. We wrote up what that really looks like in Hong Kong with a baby or infant.
How far you have flown. A short hop from Southeast Asia or Australia is one thing. A long-haul flight with a big time change means writing off most of day one, so book five days and count four.
Whether you are doing Lantau. The Ngong Ping cable car to the Big Buddha is a 25-minute ride each way over 5.7 kilometres, and that is before you have walked anywhere. Reviewers suggest allowing about four hours for Ngong Ping as a whole.
Arrival and departure days. The Airport Express reaches Hong Kong station in about 24 minutes, which is fast enough that a morning arrival really does give you an afternoon. An evening arrival gives you nothing.

Quick answers
Are 3 days in Hong Kong enough with kids? Enough for a stopover with one theme park in it. Not enough for both parks and the city. If three days is what you have, pick one park and do not try to squeeze the other in.
Is 4 or 5 days enough for Hong Kong with kids? Yes, and five is the more comfortable of the two. Four works if you do one park rather than two.
Is 7 days too much for Hong Kong? For the city on its own, usually yes with children. Seven days is worth booking if you are adding Macau, Lantau or a beach day, not if you are adding more Kowloon.
How many days do you need for Hong Kong Disneyland? One. It is a compact park and a single day covers it comfortably, which is why we would spend the day you save on the city instead.
Do you need a day for Ocean Park too? Yes, a full one. It is a hillside site split between a lowland area and a hilltop Summit that keeps its own daily times, and it is a separate trip from Disneyland in every sense.
