Best Time to Visit Hong Kong: Month by Month (Weather, Typhoons & Crowds)

The best time to visit Hong Kong is mid-October to early December. That stretch gives you the year's lowest humidity, little rain, clear skies, and typhoon season winding down. If you want one month, pick November.

Most guides stop at "autumn is nice." The more useful question is what you give up in every other month, because plenty of people can only travel in July or at Lunar New Year. So below is every month with the real numbers from the Hong Kong Observatory's 1991 to 2020 climate normals, plus the holiday dates that decide how crowded it gets.

Hong Kong month by month

Temperatures are the average daily high and low. Rain days are days with any measurable rain. Signal 8 days are the average number of days per month with the No. 8 typhoon signal or higher, when most of the city closes.

  • January: 18.7°C / 14.6°C, 33mm of rain over about 6 days, 74% humidity. Cool and dry, often cloudy. Good for walking the city and hiking; bring a proper jacket.
  • February: 19.4°C / 15.3°C, 39mm over about 8 days, 79% humidity. Similar to January but greyer. Lunar New Year usually lands here (6 February in 2027).
  • March: 21.9°C / 17.6°C, 75mm over about 10 days, 82% humidity. The dullest month of the year, with just 100 hours of sunshine. Fog and drizzle can blur the skyline.
  • April: 25.6°C / 21.1°C, 153mm over about 11 days, 83% humidity. Warm and sticky, with Easter crowds. Still a reasonable month if you plan around haze.
  • May: 28.8°C / 24.5°C, 291mm over about 15 days, 83% humidity. The rainy season starts properly and thunderstorms become common.
  • June: 30.7°C / 26.5°C, 492mm over about 19 days, 82% humidity. The wettest month of the year.
  • July: 31.6°C / 26.9°C, 386mm over about 18 days, 81% humidity. The hottest month, and the start of peak typhoon odds (0.53 Signal 8 days on average).
  • August: 31.3°C / 26.7°C, 453mm over about 18 days, 81% humidity. The most likely month for a Signal 8 (0.80 days on average) and the most thunderstorm days.
  • September: 30.5°C / 26.1°C, 321mm over about 15 days, 78% humidity. Still summer in everything but name, with 0.67 Signal 8 days on average.
  • October: 28.1°C / 23.9°C, 120mm over about 8 days, 73% humidity. The sunniest month, at 198 hours. Early October is busy; the second half is excellent.
  • November: 24.5°C / 20.3°C, 39mm over about 6 days, 72% humidity. The best all-round month. No Signal 8 days in the 30-year average.
  • December: 20.4°C / 16.2°C, 29mm over about 5 days, 70% humidity. The driest month and the least humid. Christmas week is the busy patch.

Why mid-October to early December is the best time to visit Hong Kong

The Observatory itself says November and December bring pleasant breezes, plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures, and that many people regard them as the best months of the year. The numbers back it up. Rainfall drops from 321mm in September to 39mm in November, humidity falls from 78% to 72%, and October to December have the lowest cloud cover of the year.

That matters more than the temperature. Hong Kong's best days are outdoor ones: a hike with a harbour view, the Peak at sunset, a ferry to an outlying island. In June it rains on 19 days out of 30. In November it rains on about 6. I have put together what to do with that weather in my guide to things to do in Hong Kong in November.

The one catch is the first week of October. National Day on 1 October starts mainland China's National Day Golden Week, a seven or eight day national holiday that Wikipedia describes as a period of heightened travel. In 2027 Hong Kong also has Chung Yeung Festival on Friday 8 October. Arrive from mid-October and you get the weather without the queues.

Typhoon season: how worried should you be?

The Observatory's line is that tropical cyclones can affect Hong Kong from May to November, with July to September the most likely months. Signal 8 is the warning that matters for a visitor, because it is the level at which most of the city closes.

Here is the reassuring part. Across a full year, Hong Kong averages 2.4 days at Signal 8 or above. Even in August, the worst month, the average is under one day. A typhoon is a real risk on a summer trip, but it is usually one lost day, not a lost holiday. The bigger summer problem is the daily rain: June to August each average 17 to 19 rain days.

If you are travelling between July and September, keep one day of your plan flexible, book refundable where you can, and have an indoor fallback. My rainy-day list for Hong Kong was written for families but works just as well for adults stuck inside.

The worst time to visit Hong Kong

For weather, June. It is the wettest month at 492mm, with rain on 19 days, and the heat and humidity are already at summer levels. July and August are hotter, but June is the month most likely to wash out your plans.

For crowds and prices, it is the big holidays rather than a season. Prices follow demand, so expect hotels to charge more on these dates:

  • Lunar New Year: 6 to 9 February 2027. Spectacular, but busy, and some family-run restaurants close for the first days.
  • Easter: 26 to 29 March 2027, a four-day public holiday in Hong Kong.
  • Labour Day: 1 May, which also starts mainland China's May Day Golden Week.
  • National Day: 1 October, the start of the mainland's longest Golden Week.
  • Christmas: 25 and 27 December 2027 are both public holidays, and the week around them is busy.

Dates are from the Hong Kong government's 2027 public holiday list.

The cheapest time to visit Hong Kong

Summer. Travel + Leisure Asia's guide names June to September as the months to go if you want to avoid large crowds, and travel site HopeGoo describes September as a shoulder month with fewer crowds and better hotel deals than late October to December. That is the trade: you pay for the good weather in autumn, and you save money in summer by accepting heat, rain and a small typhoon risk.

If you want value and dry weather together, try January and February outside Lunar New Year. It will be cool and sometimes cloudy, but it is dry, and you stay clear of the busier October to December window.
