Things to Do in Hong Kong in November: Weather, What's On and Why It Is the Best Month to Visit

Things to do in Hong Kong in November start with the weather, because November is the month the city finally cooperates. The humidity drops, the rain almost stops, the typhoon season is effectively over, and the hills and the harbour are as clear as they get all year. I have lived through enough sticky Septembers here to say it plainly: if you can pick your dates, pick November.
Below is what is actually on in November 2026, with dates taken from the organisers' own pages, the climate numbers from the Hong Kong Observatory, and the things that quietly get better this month, like hiking and the view from the Peak. Where something falls just outside November (Clockenflap, for one), I say so.
November weather in Hong Kong: the real numbers
These are the Hong Kong Observatory's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for November, with October and December alongside so you can see the shape of autumn.
- Temperature: a mean daily high of 24.5°C and a low of 20.3°C. October runs 28.1°C to 23.9°C, December 20.4°C to 16.2°C. November is the only month that lands squarely in the comfortable middle.
- Rain: 39.3 mm for the whole month, across 5.7 days with any measurable rain. October averages 120.3 mm and June 491.5 mm. Only December, January and February average less, and none by much.
- Humidity: 72 per cent, the second-lowest of the year after December. Compare 83 per cent in April and May.
- Sunshine: 172.3 hours, which is 52 per cent of the possible daylight. Only October scores higher.
- Typhoons: on average 0.57 days a November carry any tropical cyclone signal at all, 0.13 days a No. 3, and the long-term average for a No. 8 or higher is zero. The signal you are more likely to meet is the Strong Monsoon Signal, which averages 4.3 days a November and just means a windy day.
- Daylight: the sun sets at 5:46pm on 1 November and 5:38pm on 30 November, and rises between 6:27am and 6:45am. Plan hikes and harbour views around that early dusk.
The practical translation: shorts and a T-shirt by day, a light layer for evenings and the ferry deck, and a proper jacket only if you are going up the Peak after dark or camping. You will not need an umbrella most days, but a small one weighs nothing.
Things to do in Hong Kong in November 2026: what's on
These are the dated events I could confirm on the organisers' pages as of late October 2026.
- Hong Kong Wine & Dine Festival, 29 October to 1 November at the Central Harbourfront Event Space. The Tourism Board lists the final day, Sunday 1 November, as running 1pm to midnight, so an early-November arrival still catches it.
- Hong Kong Sixes cricket, 30 October to 1 November at Tin Kwong Road Recreation Ground in Ho Man Tin. Twelve national teams, three days, short-format matches you can dip into for an hour.
- Disney Halloween Time ends 1 November. Hong Kong Disneyland's Halloween season runs 18 September to 1 November 2026. Last year the Christmas season started on 14 November and ran to 4 January; the 2026 Christmas dates had not been announced when I checked the resort's newsroom on 23 October, so expect a quiet changeover week in between.
- Macau Grand Prix, 19 to 22 November. The 73rd edition runs Thursday to Sunday on the Guia street circuit. The Guia circuit is ordinary public road for the rest of the year, so if you are planning a Macau day trip that weekend, expect closures in that part of the peninsula.
- Oxfam Trailwalker, 20 to 22 November. Teams of four cover 100 km along most of the MacLehose Trail within 48 hours, starting at Pak Tam Chung in Sai Kung and finishing in Tuen Mun. You cannot join on the day, but if you are hiking the MacLehose that weekend you will share it with the teams, their support crews and a lot of cheering.
- Hong Kong WinterFest is listed on the Tourism Board's events calendar for November to December 2026. The detailed programme was not published when I checked, so treat it as a late-November onwards thing.
- Hairy crab season. Cantonese and Shanghainese restaurants run hairy crab menus through November. It is a seasonal thing worth ordering once, even if the picking is fiddly.
One correction to the older November round-ups you will find online: Clockenflap 2026 is not in November. The festival has confirmed 4 to 6 December at the Central Harbourfront. If live music is the reason for your trip, shift it by a week.
Hike: this is the month the trails were made for
If there is one thing to do in Hong Kong in November that you cannot do as well in any other month, it is walk uphill. Summer hiking here means average highs above 31°C and regular thunderstorms; November gives you a 24.5°C average high, dry paths and views that go on for miles.
Start with the Dragon's Back if you want the classic ridge-and-beach combination close to the city, or one of the shorter walks in the beginner's guide to hiking in Hong Kong if you are not sure how much you want to commit. For something seasonal, the silvergrass is out from November on Tai Mo Shan and is usually at its fullest this month on Sunset Peak, which turns whole hillsides pale gold in the late afternoon.
Two November-specific notes. First, the early sunset: with the sun down before 5:50pm all month, start any summit hike by lunchtime and carry a torch. Second, the Trailwalker weekend (20 to 22 November) closes nothing, but the MacLehose Trail from Pak Tam Chung westwards will be busy with teams and support crews, so pick another trail those three days.
The Peak and the harbour: go now, while you can see them
Victoria Peak is on every list, but the view is only as good as the air, and in November the air is as good as it gets: 52 per cent of possible sunshine, humidity in the low 70s, and the Observatory's long-term average for fog days in November is zero. If the Peak disappointed you in a hazy July, this is the month to give it another go.
Whether you take the tram up is a separate question, covered in is the Peak Tram worth it. My November answer: ride it up for the novelty, then walk the flat Lugard Road loop and come down on foot or by bus. For sunset, the west-facing lookouts (Lugard Road, Braemar Hill, the Sai Wan Swimming Shed) all work better in November's clean air, and you only need to be in position by about 5:15pm.
Can you still swim? Beaches in November
Yes, with a caveat about lifeguards. The sea at North Point averages 23.7°C in November, down from 26.5°C in October but a long way from cold. The catch is that the government's lifeguard season at the public beaches runs April to October, and most beaches drop to no cover from 1 November.
On the south side of Hong Kong Island, the Leisure and Cultural Services Department keeps lifeguards on from 8am to 5pm through November at Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, Middle Bay, Stanley Main and Big Wave Bay. Shek O, South Bay, Chung Hom Kok, St Stephen's and Turtle Cove have no lifeguard service from November to March. Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, Middle Bay, Stanley Main, Big Wave Bay and Shek O all have shark prevention nets. So if swimming matters, Repulse Bay or Big Wave Bay are the sensible November choices; Shek O is still a lovely place to sit, but you swim at your own risk.
Evenings: races, crab and the early dark
Because the sun is down by quarter to six, November evenings are long, and the city uses them well. Wednesday night racing at Happy Valley Racecourse is in full swing (the season runs September to mid-July and public entry is HK$10). The Symphony of Lights still runs at 8pm, and the cooler air makes the Tsim Sha Tsui promenade a far nicer place to stand for it than it was in August. And book one hairy crab dinner; it is the dish this month is known for.
Practical notes for a November trip
- No public holidays. Hong Kong's 2026 holiday list jumps from the Chung Yeung holiday on 19 October straight to Christmas Day, so November has none of the local long-weekend surges you get in October and at Easter.
- Grand Prix weekend (19 to 22 November) is not the weekend for a casual Macau day trip. Go on a different weekend unless the racing is the point.
- Pack for 20°C to 25°C. One light jacket, one umbrella, sunscreen, and real shoes for the hills. Travelling with children? The month-by-month breakdown in best time to visit Hong Kong with kids reaches the same October-or-November conclusion.
- Typhoon risk is close to nil but not zero: the Observatory averages about half a day of any cyclone signal per November. Check the forecast the day before a boat trip and otherwise stop worrying about it.
- The ferries are at their best. The Star Ferry and the outlying-island boats are exposed to the weather, and in November that is an advantage.
Quick answers
Is November a good month to go to Hong Kong? It is the best month. The Observatory's normals give November a 24.5°C average high, 39.3 mm of rain, 72 per cent humidity and 52 per cent of possible sunshine, with typhoon risk close to zero. Only the three winter months are drier, and December is already noticeably cooler.
What are the top things to do in Hong Kong in November? Hike (Dragon's Back, Tai Mo Shan, Sunset Peak for the silvergrass), go up the Peak on a clear day, watch the Macau Grand Prix (19 to 22 November) or the Trailwalker finish, eat hairy crab, do a Wednesday night at Happy Valley, and catch the start of Disneyland's Christmas season if the 2026 dates follow last year's mid-November pattern.
What are the dos and don'ts for a November visit? Do start hikes early, because the sun sets before 5:50pm. Do swim at Repulse Bay, Deep Water Bay, Middle Bay, Stanley Main or Big Wave Bay, where lifeguards stay on until 5pm in November. Don't plan on swimming at Shek O with cover; its lifeguard service stops in October. Don't come for Clockenflap; it is 4 to 6 December in 2026. Don't take a Macau day trip on Grand Prix weekend unless you want the racing.
Is it warm enough to swim in Hong Kong in November? The sea averages 23.7°C in November, so yes for most people, especially in the first half of the month. The issue is lifeguards, not temperature.
Does it rain or typhoon in November? Rarely. November averages 39.3 mm over about six rainy days, and the long-term average for a No. 8 typhoon signal in November is zero. October still carries some risk; by November the season is effectively done.
