Things to Do in Hong Kong in December: Weather, Christmas, WinterFest and What's On

Things to do in Hong Kong in December come with the driest, least humid weather of the year, a music festival on the harbourfront, the city's biggest race day and a Christmas that Hong Kong takes more seriously than you might expect. It is also the month the city gets genuinely cool for the first time, which catches out visitors who packed for the tropics.

Below is what is actually on in December 2026, with dates from the organisers' own pages, climate figures from the Hong Kong Observatory, and the things I would do this month anyway. Where a date has not been announced yet, I say so rather than guess.

December weather in Hong Kong: the real numbers

These are the Observatory's 1991 to 2020 climate normals for December.

  • Temperature: a mean daily high of 20.4°C and a low of 16.2°C. That is about four degrees cooler than November (24.5°C and 20.3°C) and a little warmer than January, the coldest month, at 18.7°C and 14.6°C.
  • Rain: 28.8 mm for the whole month, across 5.3 days with any measurable rain. That makes December the driest month of the year. June averages 491.5 mm.
  • Humidity: 70 per cent, the lowest of any month.
  • Sunshine: 161.6 hours, 48 per cent of the possible daylight.
  • Typhoons: the long-term average for any tropical cyclone signal in December is zero. What you may get instead is the Strong Monsoon Signal, which averages 5.1 days in December, more than any other month. It means strong, cold winter monsoon winds, not a storm.
  • Daylight: the sun sets at 5:38pm on 1 December and 5:50pm on 31 December, and rises between 6:46am and 7:02am. The winter solstice is 22 December.

The practical translation: a long-sleeved top by day, a proper jacket for evenings, the Peak and the ferry deck, and something warmer if a cold snap is forecast. Layers beat one heavy coat. You can leave the umbrella in the bag most days.

Things to do in Hong Kong in December 2026: what's on

These are the dated events I could confirm as of late October 2026.

  • Clockenflap, 4 to 6 December at the Central Harbourfront Event Space. Keshi headlines Friday, Hayley Williams Saturday and Slowdive plays Sunday, with Queens of the Stone Age, Kim Gordon and The Jesus and Mary Chain also on the first-wave lineup. It is an outdoor festival with the skyline as a backdrop, and December's dry weather is a big part of why it works.
  • Hong Kong International Races week, 9 to 13 December. It opens with a Wednesday night meeting at Happy Valley on 9 December and finishes on Sunday 13 December at Sha Tin, where the LONGINES Hong Kong Cup (2,000 metres on turf, HK$40 million in prize money) is the headline race. Even if you never bet, it is the meeting that brings top horses and jockeys in from overseas.
  • The Nutcracker, 11 to 27 December. Hong Kong Ballet's version is set in Hong Kong and plays at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre in Tsim Sha Tsui. It is the easiest grown-up Christmas night out in the city.
  • Hong Kong WinterFest. The Tourism Board lists it for November 2026 to January 2027. The detailed 2026 programme was not out when I checked; last year's edition was centred on Central and ran into the first week of January.
  • Disney Christmas. Last year Hong Kong Disneyland's Christmas season ran from 14 November to 4 January. The resort had not announced the 2026 dates on its newsroom when I checked on 25 October.
  • Dongzhi, 22 December. The winter solstice festival is a traditional family-dinner night for many Hong Kong households.
  • Christmas Day and the day after. Friday 25 December and Saturday 26 December are both public holidays in 2026, so the Christmas weekend runs Friday to Sunday.

New Year's Eve: check before you plan around it

Most December round-ups promise the Victoria Harbour fireworks at midnight on 31 December. Be careful with that. The government cancelled the 2025 to 2026 New Year's Eve fireworks after the Tai Po fire, and held an alternative countdown event instead. Whether the fireworks return for 2026 to 2027 had not been announced when I checked in late October. The Tourism Board's New Year Countdown page is where the official answer will appear; until it does, treat any "harbour fireworks" cruise you are offered as a bet, not a booking.

Hike: dry trails, clear views, early dark

December picks up where November leaves off for hiking. It is the driest month of the year, the air is the least humid, and a 20°C afternoon is perfect walking weather. The Dragon's Back is the obvious first pick if you want a ridge and a beach without leaving Hong Kong Island.

For something seasonal, the silvergrass on Tai Mo Shan is still out through December. Tai Mo Shan is also where people go before dawn on the rare cold-snap days, hoping to see frost; frost is reported in Hong Kong on only one or two days a year on average, so do not build a trip around it.

The constraint is daylight. With sunset between 5:38pm and 5:50pm, start any summit hike by midday, carry a headtorch and a warm layer for the top, and watch the forecast for the Strong Monsoon Signal, which makes exposed ridges cold and windy.

Racing, the ballet and the long evenings

With the sun down before six, December evenings are long, and they are cool enough to spend outdoors. If you are in town for International Races week, the Wednesday meeting at Happy Valley Racecourse on 9 December is the atmospheric one: a floodlit track surrounded by tower blocks, and public entry is HK$10. The Sha Tin finale on 13 December is the bigger day for the racing itself.

Book The Nutcracker early if you want a Christmas-week date. And for a free evening, the harbourfront promenades are far more pleasant in December than in summer, and Tsim Sha Tsui's waterfront is an easy walk from the Cultural Centre after the ballet.

Disneyland and the Christmas crowds

Hong Kong Disneyland in Christmas season is a real draw, but December is also one of the park's busiest months. Queue Times' data puts December alongside January and February as the most popular months, and the local school Christmas holiday starts around Christmas Eve. If you want the festive decorations without the worst queues, go on a weekday in the first half of December. The detail on days and times to avoid is in when Hong Kong Disneyland is least crowded.

Can you swim in December?

Hardy swimmers do. The sea at North Point averages 20.0°C in December, down from 23.7°C in November. The government keeps lifeguards on all winter, 8am to 5pm, at a short list of beaches: Deep Water Bay on Hong Kong Island, plus Clear Water Bay Second Beach, Silverstrand, Golden Beach, Lido Beach and Casam Beach in the New Territories. Everywhere else you swim at your own risk. Deep Water Bay is the only one of those on Hong Kong Island.

Practical notes for a December trip

  • Pack for 16°C to 20°C, with a warmer layer for evenings, hilltops and cold snaps. Real shoes for the hills, sunscreen for the clear days.
  • Plan around the Christmas weekend. 25 and 26 December are public holidays and schools are off, so expect holiday crowds that week, especially at Disneyland.
  • Book Clockenflap weekend hotels early. The festival (4 to 6 December) sits right on the Central waterfront.
  • Typhoons are not a December concern. The Observatory's long-term average for December tropical cyclone signals is zero. Wind from the winter monsoon is the weather to watch, especially before a boat trip.
  • November is the warmer alternative. If you would rather swim and hike in shorts, Hong Kong in November is about four degrees warmer and nearly as dry.

Quick answers

Is it worth visiting Hong Kong in December? Yes. December is the driest month of the year (28.8 mm of rain on average) with the lowest humidity (70 per cent) and no typhoon risk, and it has Clockenflap, the International Races and the Christmas season. The trade-offs are cooler weather, early sunsets and busy Christmas week crowds.

Is it very cold in Hong Kong in December? Not by European or North American standards. The Observatory's average December high is 20.4°C and the average low 16.2°C. It feels colder than the numbers suggest on Strong Monsoon days, at the Peak and on ferries, so bring a jacket and layers.

What should I not miss in Hong Kong in December 2026? Clockenflap (4 to 6 December), the Happy Valley night races on 9 December or the LONGINES Hong Kong Cup at Sha Tin on 13 December, The Nutcracker (11 to 27 December), a clear-day hike, and the Christmas lights along the harbourfront.

What are the dos and don'ts for a December visit? Do start hikes by midday, because the sun sets before 5:50pm. Do visit Disneyland on a weekday before the school break. Don't assume the New Year's Eve fireworks are on until the government confirms them; the 2025 to 2026 show was cancelled. Don't pack only summer clothes.

Does Hong Kong celebrate Christmas? Very much so. Christmas Day and the day after are public holidays, the Tourism Board runs WinterFest from November into January, and malls and the harbourfront put up large Christmas displays.
